Bar Mitzvah
A boy becomes Bar Mitzvah on his 13th Hebrew birthday, marking his transition to religious adulthood. While there is no prescribed ceremony, it is traditionally celebrated with his first Aliyah, or call up, to read from the Torah. To plan and ensure a meaningful celebration, please discuss all aspects of your son’s Bar Mitzvah with Rabbi Shindler or the Wardens. They will be happy to guide you through the process and help make the day special for your family.
Bat Mitzvah
Girls reach Bat Mitzvah at the age of 12, signifying their own transition to religious adulthood. It is common for a Bat Mitzvah girl to deliver a Dvar Torah (a brief talk or written piece that explains and reflects on a passage from the Torah) on Shabbat, though there are many ways to celebrate this milestone. The Rabbi and Wardens are available to discuss various options and help you plan a memorable and meaningful celebration for your daughter.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Programme
For students in years 7-9, CNSS offers a wonderful and immersive Bar/Bat Mitzvah programme. This programme is filled with exciting challenges and opportunities to learn about this important stage of life alongside friends. It’s a great way to prepare for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah in a supportive and engaging environment.
Second Bar Mitzvah
In recent years, the custom of celebrating a Second Bar Mitzvah has emerged, particularly in recognition of the longer lives many people are now enjoying. Based on King David’s Psalm 90, which states, “The span of our life is seventy years, or, given the strength, eighty years,” the age of 83 represents a lifetime and a Bar Mitzvah combined. Celebrating a Second Bar Mitzvah at the age of 83 is a wonderful way to express gratitude for a life well-lived in the service and presence of God.
